Term 6- Week 4

Look out authors here Robins come....

We can hardly believe that we're at the end of the fourth week of our final Summer Term in Robins and with each day that passes Robins continue to impress us with their writing skills! Some of us have almost written the whole of The Enormous Turnip, using a story map to help and showing us that they are using their phonetic skills to have a go at sounding out words. Their story structures are continuing to develop and we have even had some Robins use story sentence starters during our morning writing! Just look at some of the impressive writing from this week!

This week in Maths we were introduced to a new piece of mathematical equipment to support us with our perceptual subitising (recognising small amounts without counting), auditory subitising (correctly saying what they have heard) and conceptual subitising to 5 (saying the groups they have seen and using this to subitise, naming the whole amount, for example I know it is 5 because I can see 4 and 1)....what could this piece of equipment be?

It was called a Rekenrek and once Robins had exhausted its use as a musical instrument by tipping the beads to the end, they were soon ready to use it show off their mathematical skills!

The Creation Story!

When we weren't busy writing or using our Rekenreks, Robins continued to learn more about the Bible's Creation Story and this week's learning focused on what God built each day of the week. They were very interested in making links between this and the seven days of the week and loved that God had a rest on Sunday!

To represent our learning we created our very own Creation Wheel, assigning a day of the Creation Story to each of us and then working together to represent this. Robins loved discussing what God created and showed fantastic recall skills when remembering the order in which they came.

Let's also look back at our time in Forest School this week, we started our adventures searching high and low for log pieces with coloured writing on them, discussing what we could see in the Forest that was the same colour! Can you spot the first colour?

There was however something different about the Forest and as we continued exploring we were soon told that unfortunately we couldn't go in the pond this week, well we could hardly see it anyway! There is hardly any water left in the pond and the water that is there would have gone above our wellies, with thick oozy mud surrounding it.....so this week we observed from a distance!

We didn't need to worry though because there was plenty more to do in the Forest, from balancing along the tape....ooooo just look at how steady we are!

......to making our very own magic wands! We carefully selected the 'wand' frame that we wanted and then wound string around to decorate it and make it extra magical!

With all this excitement around the Forest, it was soon time to take a rest in the den!

We certainly enjoyed the shade!

Our focus this term in PE involves using the Adventure playground equipment correctly, yet over the last couple of weeks, we were finding that we were already running into a few problems even before using the equipmment.....the weather, it had been just too hot, but this week we were on!

The first few minutes involved lots of "I'm stuck, I'm scared, it's too high". By the end of the lesson, they were feeling confident and adventurous and climbing high.

After the Adventure Playground session, we headed back into the classroom. Once inside we discovered our Mystery Reader had chosen their favourite book and would be arriving with us very soon. Excitement levels were high, was it a Mum, a Dad, a Grandparent ???? We didn't have to wait long before a VERY familiar face arrived in the classroom.....and absolute silence fell...only for a second or two whilst the realisation set in that yes - it was indeed Ms. Munday who was this week's Mystery Reader.

If you or a member of your family are available next Thursday - please let us know - we have a few gaps to fill!

This led us nicely into Friday morning when we were joined by Chenoa Leaver from West Berkshire Libraries who came in to promote this year's Summer Reading Challenge - Story Garden Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors. More information can be found in the reading records this week.

That brings us to the end of another busy week - almost - we still have tomorrow to go -yes Saturday - it's our school Summer Fete and we hear that just about all of you are coming along - fantastic!
