TERM 4 WEEK 2
What a week!
* Show and Tell
* Hungerford Food Community
* World Book Day
* Book in a jar
* A puppy
* And lots of learning too....
Lets get going then.
On Monday, we had our first Show and Tell and what a start we got off too. One of our Robins brought in his swimming medals. Not only did we get to hold the medals we had the opportunity to ask lots of questions too. We also watched a short video clip - our Robin jumped into the water - one minute he was there, the next he was gone, yes he was right under the water. Safe to say he bounced back up again. We watched it over and over again and each time there was a question - did you have your eyes open, what stage are you in, what is your swimming teacher called, did you have to hold your breath? Our Robin spoke clearly and with confidence - a great start. We really love Show and Tell.
In Maths this week we were 'taking 5 apart' and then putting in back together. We started off with a tower of 5 unifix cubes, we quickly discovered that we could take them apart and put them into groups e.g 4 and 1, 3 and 2, 5 and 0. However, we found that when we wanted to put them back together, we could only do it one way - back to a tower of 5. So, we brought in multilink - this was a game changer, we found so many ways of rearranging 5.
On Wednesday, we engaged in our usual phonics and Maths in the morning, so in the afternoon we were ready for some 'hand on learning'. Wednesday is our Pantomimus day and we were really looking forward to seeing Danielle the music teacher and heading into the hall for singing and dancing and all things music. Before that though, we welcomed Penny and her team from Hungerford Food Community who were helping us to make Welsh cakes. We were weighing, rubbing, cutting, mixing, rolling, squashing, cooking and the best part - eating! The photos tell it all (well not exactly all - they don't tell us about the wonderful small that filled the room and they don't tell us about the mess we left on the carpet - all for a very good cause though), the children were fully engaged - they were absolutely delightful and it was one of the best cooking afternoons we have had so far. Huge thank you to Penny and team for all their support - we can't wait to see you back soon when you bring the smoothie bike!
Then on Thursday, the day we had been waiting for , the day we had been talking about - yes it was WORLD BOOK DAY. In through the door arrived Stickman, the Highway Rat, the witch from Room on the Broom, a frog, the Gruffalo, mermaids cats, princesses, turtles and toads and so many more characters. The children all looked amazing in their costumes! Of course World Book Day is so much more than dressing up, it's a celebration of reading, stories and storytelling, imagination, adventure, reflection and sharing.
The day started with a whole school worship where the children discovered that World Book Day is celebrated across the world. The entries to the "book in a jar" competition were on show and there was real excitement about what the day would hold. Following the worship the children were able to vote for their favourite "book in a jar". This was when they also met a real author. They met Leon Mitchell, the author of "Felicity Fire". In the afternoon the children met Leon again for some storytelling. He helped the children to orally make up a class story. The children had lots of wonderful ideas.
Again, in the afternoon the children also had a visit from the character "Glinda" the good witch from Wicked. The children loved listening to her sing and then they drew a portrait of her.
Throughout the day there were also writing activities going on linked with the story "The Jolly Postman". The children are taking part in the Postal Museum's national Fairy Tale Mail project as part of their 40-year anniversary exhibition in 2026. The children listened to the story of "The Jolly Postman" and then drew their favourite fairy tale character from the story and wrote some simple sentences about why they liked this character. These pieces of writing are going to be sent to the museum and may feature in their exhibition or online. Watch this space!
And then, as if we had not had more than enough excitement in one week - there was one more surprise to come. You know the saying "never work with children or animals" well, we went for the double whammy - we welcomed STORM into school - Storm is Rascal's nephew and he is learning the ropes from his much loved uncle! Taking a photo was almost impossible - we were all just too excited and full of love.
