Viking Day

On Wednesday 1st July, Red Kites had Viking Day. The children dressed up in a variety of Viking costumes such as warriors, Viking ladies and royalty. We took part in lots of different Viking based activities to learn more about some Viking traditions and battles. First, we looked at Old Norse; learning about how names were created and wrote our Viking names into clay. Then, we explored the Battle of Stamford Bridge. After finding out about what happened and who was involved, we acted out the battle, using our shields and weapons from home. Everybody got stuck into their roles and were very keen to battle.

In The afternoon, we were lucky enough to learn about Viking food with the Hungerford Food Community Group. The children milled flour, made flat breads and added homemade butter and honey to them before eating. Back in class, we found out about the origins of some place names. Did you know if a place name has the suffix -by, -thorpe or-toft it is likely the Vikings founded it? Finally, we explored Viking Gods and created our own top trump cards.

We had a great day!

Sports Day

On Thursday 2nd July, we had an incredible sports day. The children worked in their houses for some of the morning to make banners, bunting, flags and gazebo decorations in their house colours. Then they were spilt into groups to try different activities such as target hoop (Quidditch), toss the hoop, score a goal, basketball, archery and many more. In the afternoon, we enjoyed some traditional races. Well done to all the children – they were amazing role models and so supportive to their teams. Thank you to all the parents who came to support too.

Finally, congratulations to Arlington on your victory!

Have a great weekend.
