What a jam packed week!

Homework has been sent out today. Please ensure that year 5’s complete workout 1 for each book and year 6 complete test 1 for each book. They need to be returned to school by next Friday. Don’t forget to keep reading at home too. Thank you.

In English, we have been focusing on word classes and ensuring we really understand what a noun is. We explored the different types of nouns: proper, common, collective, partitive, pronouns and abstract. Next week, we will focus on verbs and their role in a sentence. For our Maths learning we have been learning about powers of 10; using counters and place value charts to support us and help us to see what actually happens to the numbers. We have also been partitioning numbers in the standard way but also in a non-standard way. Again the counters and place value charts were great resources to aid our learning.

In Science, after learning about physical properties of materials last week, this week was all about materials and their everyday uses. We discussed the jobs of some materials and how their properties make that material the best for the job. Next week we will complete an investigation into thermal insulators. In Computing, our learning about quizzes continues. This week we were given questions and we had to decide which question type to choose to make a quiz a good quiz. The children loved putting images into their questions and some even wanted to make their own quizzes at home!

In RE, our focus was ‘Who is to blame for Jesus’ death?’ We had lots of discussions about the different people who had a role in Jesus’ death and what part they played. We then decided who we thought was the most to blame and why. In PE, Coach Tom supported us with our football skills. We were working on passing and finding a space to receive the ball. Our learning journey with trombones began this week in music. We were able to explore the parts of the instrument and even play a few notes. It was very loud and next week we are going to work on playing quieter!

We also continued with our study of Greek art and architecture, sketching sections of the Parthenon frieze and the caryatids, working on drawing accurately from observation and including detail and shading.

And finally…

We've been inspired by the fruit growing in our school grounds and wrote haikus about it. We illustrated them with pastel still life drawings in the style of Paul Cézanne.

Come and see more of them at our exhibit at the Newbury Show this weekend!
