What an incredible week!

On Monday, Red Kites had the opportunity to visit Kelmscott Manor, home of the artist and designer William Morris. We were given a tour of the house where we worked as pattern detectives, identified motifs and repeated designs and we also got to explore the gardens, where we learned about the plants that inspired his patterns. After lunch, we used our sketches to create our own floral motif block, which we then used alongside a William Morris design to create a wallpaper design. Look how effective they were!

Science Week:

This week was Science week. We have been very busy completing lots of different tasks that involved working together, listening to ideas and thinking scientifically. On Tuesday, we thought about reflection and which materials would be the most reflective. On Wednesday, we were given a role – a plant, soil, animals or water. Then we needed to see how we were connected by using wool and creating our ‘eco-system’. On Thursday, we were thinking about displacement and buoyancy. We needed to use foil and then newspaper to create the best boat to hold marbles. The winner held 64 marbles before sinking! On Friday, we became birds. We had to build nests using resources in nature; our goal was to make it strong and comfy. The only rule was no hands!! We had to use pegs to pick things up and move things around.

Science Day:

On Wednesday, we came together in houses to complete a mission – drop the egg without damaging it! Each house worked in small groups with a choice of resources to build protection, a parachute or a landing pad. The year five and sixes made excellent leaders to help their groups achieve their goal. The house captains were particularly strong when guiding the children and supporting them. In the end only 4 eggs remained intact.

Our Year 6 homework projects have started coming in and we've been absolutely blown away by the creativity and hard work that's gone into these pieces! Have a look at some of the brilliant ideas our Year 6s have come up with! We were particularly impressed by Erin's sculptural interpretation of her family tree!

Have a lovely weekend!
