12th June '26

We have had another busy week. The week started off with Year 2 planning their own setting descriptions for our focus text, "The Pirates Next Door". They thought about what things there were at "Dull - on - Sea" where the story is set. We also thought about things that we would be able to smell and hear. We also thought about the weather and what the people were like.

In maths, Year 2 continued to think about time. We found out that there are sixty minutes in an hour, thirty minutes in half an hour and fifteen minutes in a quarter of an hour. Using this knowledge, we worked out how many minutes there are in three quarters of an hour.

In computing this week both Year 1 and Year 2 had a focus on internet safety. First we thought about things that need passwords or padlocks. We talked about a password being like a digital padlock. Only the person who knows the password ("key") can open up the digital device. This helps to keep our personal information safe. We also thought about what personal information is. It is information about ourselves that we don't want everybody to know.

In design and technology we continued to think about puppets. One of our Kingfishers brought in an amazing hand puppet that they had made at home. They explained to the class how they had made it. The children then designed their own hand puppets this week. Following on from celebrating David Attenborough's 100th birthday and the art that was completed in school, the children had a choice of three endangered species that they could base their puppet on. These animals were the Hawksbill Turtle, the African Forest Elephant and the Amur Leopard. Have a look at some of our designs.

Despite the rain meaning we had to do our PE inside this week both Year 1 and 2 didn't allow this to dampen their enthusiasm in developing their throwing and catching skills, all in preparation for supporting us with our Tennis skills this term!

We warmed up with a freeze tag game, where we needed to use our co-ordination skills and negotiate the space around us....

Once we were warmed up, it was time to practice our throwing skills. We learnt how to ensure we used our under arm throw to support us with accuracy, to look at where we were throwing the beanbag and how hard we threw the beanbag to ensure it landed on one of the cones.

It was quite tricky but we kept on persevering and adapted how hard or soft we were throwing the beanbag so that we developed our accuracy.

Just look at how much fun we had!

In History this week we continued to explore significant people from the past and began exploring what it means to be famous, with both Year 1 and Year 2 showing a wonderful understanding that you can be significant without having to be famous. Our Year 1 and Year 2 children described being famous in the following way;

"It means that you're really good at something"

"You're really rich"

"It means that everyone knows who you are"

"It means that lots of people like you"

We settled on the following meaning for famous- Someone that is known and recognised by lots people.

After playing our famous 'Guess who' game, which both Year 1 and Year 2 did well with, we then began talking about who is current significant in their lives and the meaning of the word significant...

important

meaningful

outstanding

special

We discussed how a significant person doesn't have to be famous and today we were going to draw a significant person in our lives that wasn't famous and then say why they are significant to us.

Here are just a few!

As we come to the end of another week we hope the sun begins to shine a little more for us over the weekend and next week! As next week is Science week, we look forward to taking part in some exciting experiments during the week!

Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you all on Monday!
