Another week has flown by. Despite there being a bank holiday which we hope you all enjoyed, we have done lots of learning in Kingfishers.

Year 2 have been planning and writing a diary entry pretending that they were one of the ugly sisters from the story Cinderella that we have been focussing on. They had lots of ideas for what they wanted to write including getting to the ball on a BMX!

In art Year 1 and Year 2 have been designing their own paper sculptures. We have focussed on Stefani Morgante's "Dancing Grandmothers" paper sculptures. This week the children thought about what they want their paper sculptures to look like.

In science Year 1 and Year 2 have set up an experiment. We are trying to find out what a bean seed needs to grow. First of all we looked at some bean seeds and came up with some super words to describe them. Words such as opaque, rigid and smooth were used - well done Kingfishers! We have put one seed in the dark but it will be warm and have water. We have put one seed in the fridge but there will be some light and water, one seed has water, light and warmth and the final seed has no water but it is being grown in the light and it is warm. We shall see what happens!

It was soon time to travel to the southernmost continent of the world, a place almost entirely covered in ice and known for being the driest, windiest, coldest and potentially surprisingly the highest continent in the world! Where were were? We were of course in....

Antarctica!

Both Year One and Year Two are becoming experts in recalling facts about Antarctica now, from knowing that it is in fact a desert to recalling features of its landscape such as volcanoes! They can discuss how although very few people live on Antarctica it is in fact visited by many tourists each year and is inhabited by scientists who study many things from wildlife to global warming.

Today however our focus was on the animals that adapt and live on this frozen continent, learning about the lives of the creatures that call this continent their home. Along the way we learnt some really interesting facts......

"An Orca or Killer Whale is in fact a Dolphin!"

"The Wandering Albatross (not seagull) has the largest wingspan of any bird"

"A Daddy Penguin stands for 75 days not eating while he waits for the baby egg to hatch!"

We then used all the facts we had learnt to create our very own Antarctica animal posters.

In Maths this week we have been finding change and Kingfishers have been working really hard to use a blank number line to help them with their working out. If you would like to continue to support them at home here is an example to show you how we have been working out our sums this week!

On Friday afternoon we were all very excited to take part in our House meetings, especially as this time the theme was centred around David Attenborough's 100th birthday! In celebration of this we were celebrating all our favourite animals in nature to create a whole school piece of art! We loved working together to discuss which animals we liked the most and why, exploring where they came from and their features and then used pencil to sketch them before using the correct colours to add colour to our drawings!

Here are a few photos from our afternoon!

What a busy end to the week we've had celebrating the voice of nature Sir David Attenborough who has shown us that with perseverance, one voice really can make a difference in the world.

A thought for the weekend......

If you could do one thing to make a difference in the world, what would it be?
