What a busy week Kingfishers have had! This week in Literacy Year 2 have been focussing on a simplified version of a talk for writing text "Alfie's Star" by Sue Cove. We created a story map and the children have been trying hard to learn the story, taking it in turns to tell it to their friends.

In phonics, Year 1 have been having a focus on Phase 4 which is based around consonant blends, where there are two consonants next to each other in a word. It is important that they learn the green words that came home last term. If you need another set of these, please let Mrs Higgins know.

Year 2 have been learning about homophones - words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. Can your child remember any? Be and bee, see and sea. Lots more have come up in lessons through the week, for example to and two.

In maths, Year 2 have been thinking about grouping an amount into tens. We have talked about how many groups of ten there are and then how many more. For example, 45 is four groups of ten and five more. We have linked this to place value. How many tens are in a number and how many ones? Please help your child to become confident in recognising their numbers to 100. They can look for these when they are out and about.

Forest School started this week and what a lot of fun we had. There were cuddly animals hiding in the trees and bushes, dens were made, nests were created and there was a lot of playing in the mud. Although there was no water in the pond, the mud that was left provided a lot of entertainment!

This week we have combined our art and science lessons. We went outside to look at the apples and pears growing on our fruit trees. We talked about the parts of the tree - the roots, the branches, the trunk, the leaves, the bark and the fruit. The children chose which tree they wanted to draw and then they labelled the different parts. The next day we cut an apple in half and saw the seeds. We talked about what the seeds would grow into if they were looked after. The children then created apple prints by making different shades of green or red. Adding white to these colours made them lighter.

We could hardly believe we were also on Thursday and what a busy week we had already had! As we settled down to our Thursday morning we were introduced to a new and exciting activity that would take place every Thursday enter.....

Shared reading!!!!

Mrs Brown explained that we would be introduced to a new book that we would read over a couple of weeks, reading a section each out loud but always having the option to say 'pass' if we didn't feel comfortable reading at that moment. During our reading we would talk about the book, discussing the word choices, events within it, making predictions, discussing the characters and engaging in activities linked to the story as well as much more!

This week's book was.....

Whose island was it?

What was the weather like on the island?

How do we know what the weather is like on the island?

Who are the characters on the front cover?

As we continued reading the book, Kingfishers blew Mrs Brown away with how confidently they read in front of each other! They absolutely loved reading the beginning of 'Grandad's garden' but we didn't quite make it to the island this week....only making it to Grandad's attic....

Why not ask your children about the item they selected from Grandad's attic?

What was it called?
Why did Grandad have it?
Where did Grandad get it from?

Kingfishers can't wait to continue 'Grandad's island' next week!

As we continued into the afternoon Robins joined us for our first Geography lesson together! For this term we will be exploring Continents and Oceans so to warm us all up Mrs Brown explained we would be listening to a Continents song to help us learn them, which we all loved!

Continents song

We did however want to start a little closer to home so we thought we start with a map of the United Kingdom, discussing which continent it is in and then looking at the different countries within it. Year 1 did a super job at labelling the UK, using a map to help them and Year 2 challenged themselves even further by labelling the sea's and ocean around the UK!

Friday was here and it was time for Maths and with more shapes on the plan, it was time to put all that we had learnt about the properties of 2D shapes into action! This week had been learning how to count vertices, our mathematical name for corners and with our new found knowledge as well as of course knowing how many sides they have we learnt how to draw 2D shapes!

Just look at how careful we were when drawing our squares! We carefully counting along the squares to makes sure that we had 4 equal sides!

We might have some architects in the making!

After all that learning it was time for our favourite sensory break....Danny Go! This week we found our favoourite Danny Go to date, with this time a dance routine centred around cooking! I'm sure Kingfishers will be eager to share this one at home but here are a few photos that we managed to take when we weren't dancing!

It was such a delight seeing the smiles on Kingfishers faces!

It was almost the end of the day and the end of the week and what better way to end our Friday but together with Robins! As we came together for PE we warmed up with our Daily Mile!

We had avoided the rain and managed our Daily Mile! Off we went into the hall for our Fitness session and wow what a fitness session it was! As we went into our different stations....red, yellow, white and blue our fitness tasks were given to us!

Red- Star jumps

Yellow- Touching the floor and then jumping up high

White- Jogging on the spot

Blue- The hardest of them all.....Lying on the floor and resting!

The children were asked to complete their activity during the timer and then moved around the activity stations discussing how they felt after each activity and the effect that the activity was having on their body.

We were thinking about....which activity was the hardest? which activity did we feel the most tired from and the least tired from? How did our heart feel whilst we were doing each activity?

Needless to say we were EXHAUSTED when we had finished!

What a great week together, we can't wait to start it all over again on Monday, have a super weekend together!

Finally, just a few reminders.....

All children must have a pair of wellingtons for forest school on a Monday. These need to be named and can be kept in school. Your child does not need to take them home unless you need them. It is also a good idea to leave your child's wellingtons in school as they may need them if it has been raining.

Please can all Year 1 and Year 2 children bring their reading books to school every day as your child might be asked to read. We also need to be able to change your child's reading book each week so it's important they have their reading book and record in school. Please ensure you are recording any reading that your child is doing in the reading record and when they read their reading book with you please record this so that we know they are ready to change their reading book.

Please can Year 1 also bring their message books to school each day.

Thank you very much for all your co-operation with this.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Higgins, Mrs Brown and Mrs Harris
