Another week has flown by and there has been lots going on! Year 2 have been continuing thinking about subtraction in maths. This week they have been subtracting a 2-digit number from a 2-digit number across a ten. They have had to look closely at the ones and see if they needed to exchange a ten for ten ones to help them.
For example, 35 - 19 = ? Here you are not able to take away 9 ones from 5 ones so you need to exchange a ten for 10 ones. This now gives you 15 ones and 2 tens. You can now take away 9 ones from 15 ones and then you take away the "ten" in 19. This leaves you with 1 ten and 6 ones.
So, 35 - 19 = 16
Year 1 have been continuing to think about their number line to 20. This week there has been a focus on finding missing numbers on their number lines.
In Literacy, Year 2 have been working towards writing a character description about Lila, the main character in our book that we have been reading. The children have created expanded noun phrases. This is where one or two adjectives are placed before the noun. If there are two adjectives, a comma is needed to separate the adjectives. For example, Lila is wearing a long, red skirt.
In spelling lessons, Year 2 have been learning "ey" at the end of words, for example "honey". Year 1 have been learning how to form plurals by adding "s". Year 1 have also been having a focus on their handwriting.
Science has seen us thinking about food that is healthy and not healthy (unhealthy).
To start with we talked about foods that we all liked. The children then had to sort a variety of foods into healthy and not healthy. We talked about how some children though cheese was healthy and some thought that is wasn't. The children learnt that we need a balanced diet. It is ok to eat some things that are not good for us, for example chocolate, as long as we don't eat too much of it. The children found out about the different food groups. They need to eat lots of fruit, vegetables and carbohydrates. However, they also need dairy, protein and even fats. Once we had talked about this, the children had a go at creating a "healthy" meal.
On Wednesday we all went to church for our Candlemass service. Both Year 1 and Year 2 had written some blessings earlier in the week linked with looking after our world. Some of these blessings were shared in our service at church. For example, "We will try to look after the environment." "We will try to look after the animals." The children wrote their blessing on a candle shape which they then cut out and decorated.
In art, the children have once again been artists. One child commented how artist make "masterpieces". There were lots of lovely "masterpieces" at the end of our art lesson. This week the children have been applying their sketching skills that they have focussed on this term The children had a photograph of the landscape by school. They copied the picture, using their skills of showing shading and texture in their pictures. The children were then able to check their drawings, if they wanted to, against the photograph to ensure that they had included all the detail that they needed.
Here are some examples of the children's super art!
In PE this week we continued to develop our Tag Rugby skills and as the weeks have progressed so have our skills! With our tag belts at the ready both Year 1 and Year 2 were ready to tag each other, who could get the most tags?
To make it harder Coach Tom got us to move in different ways, from running to bunny hops and even crouching down! It was exhausting!
It was then time to work in threes, with one person acting as the referee and two as the players, it was a race to see who could get each others tags!
Wow- just look how fast they're moving!
On Thursday afternoon we travelled around the world and even had time to send back postcards!
Once we had thought about where we were in the world, and the affect that the equator would have on the climate of the country we then started thinking about how this would effect the activities that we could do, what we would wear and what we might see on holiday.
Year 1 and Year 2 loved exploring the world for the afternoon and showed superb knowledge of how climate is affected depending on where you are in the world!

We had reached the end of the week and it was Number Day of course! Dressed in numbers from head to....well shoe, children came through the gates ready to take on a day filled with....you've guessed it NUMBERS!
In the morning Kingfishers logged onto Times Table Rock Stars for the first time ever!

Enter Mrs Brown or should I say...
Buddy Flowers!
After a few technical difficulties Kingfishers all managed to get logged on and create their own rockstar name! Some even managed to have a little go at the times table activities on offer! Next week we will continue to explore TTRS within class and then we will be sending home their logins for you to log onto at home.
After we'd practiced our tables it was time to solve real everyday money problems before spending the after in our house groups enjoying Maths games! What a way to spend the day, just look at how much Maths fun we had....
We have had another super busy week and what a fantastic way to end the week but to celebrate how well our Kingfishers did when they took part in the Speed stacking competition at Park House this week! They should true perseverance and a wonderful sense of team spirit as they cheered each other on, all extremely excited to share with us how much they enjoyed taking part in this event!
Speed stacking February 2026

Next week is our final week before half term and we will be raising awareness for Children's Mental Health and the theme this year is 'This is my place', which aims to support the systems around children and young people to help them feel they belong.

Have a wonderful weekend, we can't wait to see you all back next week for our final week of Spring one and who knows we might have one day without any rain!
