Well, another week has flown by. We have continued to be busy, busy, busy! The children have definitely been "living life in all its fullness".
In Literacy Year 2 have continued to carry out activities linked with "Lila and the Secret of Rain" by David Conway. This week there has been a real focus on grammar activities. We have looked at the suffixes "ing", "er" and "est". The children have written sentences linked with the story such as, "The clouds became darker and darker." "Lila climbed the tallest mountain."
In maths Year 2 have been learning how to subtract across a ten. For example, 12 - 3. They make 12 with the base 10 and take away 2 to get back to 10. They then need to exchange the ten left for ten ones so that they can continue taking away what is left of the "3". They have already taken away 2, so they need to take away 1 more.
The children have also used base ten to support with this. For example, 25 - 7. The children made 25 by taking two tens and five ones. They take away the 5 ones to get back to 20. They still need to take away 2 as they are taking away 7 in total. A ten is exchanged for ten ones so the remaining 2 can be taken away. 7 has then been taken away in total and the children then count the tens and ones that are left.
In computing the children have been creating digital art by using the programme "2 paint a picture" on Purple Mash. They have painted pictures by making the colours lighter or darker by changing the amount of "water" used when creating the colour needed. They have been painting in an "impressionist" style. This is a style that is light and colourful and uses short, quick brushstrokes. Instead of the children having to paint lots of little brush strokes the painting programme creates several brush strokes at a time for them.
In science, the children have continued to think about the work "offspring" and we have looked at different life cycles. We have also compared life cycles thinking about what is the same and what is different. Not all life cycles have the same amount of stages. The children could then choose a life cycle that they would like to make.
In art the children have continued developing their pencil skills. This week the children have been learning how to create "texture". By adding texture to their drawings, it can make items look more realistic.
First of all we went outside and did some wax rubbings of different textures. The children did rubbings of wood, bricks, tyres etc. We then talked about how you would draw this texture. The children then had a go at copying some other textures to give them some ideas of how they can create "texture" in their own drawings.
It was time to get warmed up and ready for our PE lesson with Coach Tom and we couldn't wait to hear what warm up we would be doing today! Drum roll please.........

Sharks and fishes!
We were now warmed up and it was time for the main activity! Today was all about developing our pace and as Coach Tom modelled the activity to us, he showed us alongside a Kingfisher just how important communication was between team mates!
Coach Tom called out a colour and our Kingfisher had to go to the correct cone and touch it...not too hard you might be thinking but as the game went on it got faster and the cones got moved around! It was a game of communication and pace!
Now we had been shown how to do the activity, it was now our turn!
We continued our fitness journey on Friday with our long awaited Daily Mile that we have really missed over the last week due to the icy conditions last week and wet conditions on other days!
In Phonics within Year 2 this week we have been exploring when 'igh' is spelt as 'y', we looked at the following words;
July
why
fly
by
try
We then discussed what the rule was when 'igh' was spelt as 'y' at the end of the word and came up with the following....
When you hear the igh sound at the end of a word, it is usually spelt with a y!
We also learnt another spelling rule this week that helped us to learn not 1 but 3 of our common exception words!

Oh you lucky duck!
could
would
should
We loved this spelling rule!
Jigsaw this week was all about celebrating our differences and we all really enjoyed discussing what we liked and discussing, sharing some wonderful discussions and getting to know each other that bit better!
If our friend didn't like the same thing as us then we could draw it on the trousers, but if they did like the same thing as us then we couldn't!
"She has brown eyes and I have blue eyes"
"He has blonde hair but I have brown hair"
"We're in different year groups"
Today we are celebrating our differences!

In Kingfishers Year 2 got the opportunity to visit the Key Stage One library and were all very excited to select their first book of 2026! From poems to adventure stories, non fiction to traditional tales, Year 2 were amazed by the selection and took their time to decide what they wanted to dive into.
Their new library book is written in their reading record and they are able to keep their book for a week, so please ensure that they share the story with you at home and bring it back ready to change next Friday! Their reading record will act as their library card so if they don't have their reading record in school they won't be able to take a library book home but will be able to choose a library book to keep in school and read throughout the week.
Each week we will be sharing some of our book reviews on our class page! Have a wonderful weekend, we can't wait to hear all about the stories you have shared together!
