We hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday weekend. Despite only being a four day week, the children have been very busy. They have certainly "lived life in all its fullness" this week.

This week the children have finished planning their own versions of "Jack and the Beanstalk". Next week the children will be writing their stories. In grammar we have been thinking about proper nouns and how we need capital letters for places and people. Hopefully the children will remember this in their stories!

In maths we have been thinking about fractions. The children are very good at recognising half of a shape and then matching it with the other half to make the whole. They have been introduced to 1/2 representing a half and they have learnt that this can represent one half of a shape, object or amount. A half is one of the two parts. The two parts make up the whole.

In science we had great fun dissecting broad beans. We learnt about how the seed coat covers the seed and protects it. Inside the bean seed there is a "food store" which feeds the baby plant and also a tiny root and a tiny beginning of a plant. To dissect the broad bean the children had to remove the seed coat and then separate the bean. They could then clearly see the baby root and the food store. The baby plant was much trickier to see in a lot of the beans. Luckily, Mrs Harris had found one so we used a magnifying pot to look at this part. The children then added labels to a diagram of a broad bean seed.

We also had a good look at our sunflowers. Almost everybody's sunflower has started to grow. They are getting taller ever day! The children are very good at remembering to water them each day. They can also remember the different parts of their plants, even the roots that they can't see.

On Thursday we celebrated VE Day. The children all came in dressed in red, white and blue. We learnt how important these colours are and why we were wearing them. The children found out about VE Day and why we celebrate it. They had great fun decorating cupcakes, we did some VE Day fractions in maths, we made collages / paintings of ourselves dressed in our VE Day outfits that the children could take home as a reminder of VE Day and we listened to "We'll Meet Again" by Vera Lynn.

For our VE Day maths the children designed celebration cakes with different decorative toppings. As we have been thinking about fractions and what "half" or "1/2" means, the children had to make sure that each half of their cake had the same amount of decorations. Both halves of the cake made up the whole cake. Each half of the cake had to have half the amount of decorations on it.

We then thought about sharing party food at a street party between two tables. Below we had a total of six cakes. Each table would have half of this amount. We looked at sharing the amount between the two tables. With six cakes, there would be three cakes on one table and three cakes on the other. Each table would have half of the total amount of cakes.

Have a look at our lovely creations of ourselves dressed in our VE Day outfits!

Friday was here and we could hardly believe our eyes when a little visitor was carried up to the gate! One of our Kingfishers had been telling us for weeks that she was getting a new member of the family and here they were, all wrapped up and ready to receive lots of attention from just about everyone who passed by!

As Mrs Brown didn't have the camera on her whilst on the gate the best way she can describe this lovely visitor to you is by finding the nearest photo she can to show you what our newest member of this Kingfishers family looks like......

But to be honest the picture really doesn't do the real puppy justice! It was simply gorgeous and made us all want a puppy!

Now once we had all pulled ourselves away from the morning gate it was time to get on with the day and as we know on Fridays we are always ready to face the day with enthusiasm, ready to take on whatever challenges may come our way and today was no different! It wasn't long before we faced our first challenge in phonics, whilst Year 1 were set a challenge of working out all the alternative 'oa' spelling words (oa, ow, oe and o-e), Year 2 were very excited when they were told that they were using dictionary's to try and correct Mrs Browns spellings mistakes.....and there were a lot!

"I've never used a dictionary before, this is great!"

Our day was whirling passed and it was soon time for our PE lesson, what could be better than spending our last hour out in the sun have fun? And what fun we had!

We warmed up by playing our colour rush game, with all bibs in the middle and the teams set we were soon given the instruction on how we were allowed to move....first up it was running....we were off collecting 1 bib at a time before running back to our team for another team member to run! When all bibs were collected we counted our bibs....how many would we have?

With us all warmed up it was now time for a new skill to be taught! This week we were introduced to a skill that we would definitely need for sports day learning how to do the..................

                                                                    l     o    n     g          j    u    m    p !

It didn't take long and we were soon bending our knees and using our arms to swing and jump as far as we could, just look at the concentration on our faces! We certainly used our perseverance today to keep trying even if we initially didn't jump as far as we would have hoped, we didn't give up!

There was also some amazing action shots taken- I can assure you that our Kingfisher landed safely in the next photo!

We had reached the end of the day and it was of course time for Show and Tell!

This week in Kingfishers show and tell seemed to have taken a nature theme, perhaps it was the sunshine that had inspired our Kingfishers this week but as we settled down we couldn't wait to see what they had to share with us!

Our first Kingfisher had been on a very special visit to a Farm! Whilst there they had met lots of animals and even got to hold lambs, sharing some wonderful photos with us and talking through them with such pride!

Our Kingfisher even talking about how they needed to spend time underneath the heat lamp because "They are still quite small so they get cold". Apparently this lamb was a bit cheeky though!

We were then told all about our Kingfishers trip on a quadbike! He was so excited to tell us how he actually got to get on and loved showing us the picture! This sounded so exciting! Some of our Kingfishers thought that they would also like to have a go but some felt it might be a little bit too scary for them, however some had also had a go on smaller ones before.....wow!

We loved hearing all about our Kingfisher trip to the farm and were so excited to learn all about the real Peacock feather that he got from the farm! We were particularly amazed at how long it was and why it had the circle at the end of it that we felt made it look a bit like an eye!

One of our Kingfishers had a super idea that the reason it might look like an eye was to frighten predators away!

Our next Kingfisher had also stayed on the nature theme and brought in their very own Red Apply tree! Yes that's right an actual tree was brought in for show and tell this week, I can't remember in the history of show and tells ever having a tree being brought in but this week we did and that's what we love about show and tell in Kingfishers!

This tree had be grown from 1 red apple seed, which was planted 1 1/2 years ago and when we asked how our Kingfisher makes sure that it keeps growing they simply said...

"I put it in some soil, I keep watering it and I make it sure has some sunshine"

Well our Kingfisher must be doing a good job, despite telling us that they'd never actually grown anything before, I'm sure you'll agree this tree is growing in a very strong apple tree!

We can't wait to see the apples start to grow!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone, enjoy the lovely sunshine and we will see all of Kingfishers back on Monday morning!
