Well another week has come to an end and what a busy week it has been. This week in numeracy we came to the end of our topic on time in maths. This week Year 1 were really focussing on the days of the week and the months of the year, thinking about what they do on different days and in different months. Year 2 have been learning about how many minutes are in an hour and how many hours there are in a day.
In Literacy the children finished their acrostic poems about summer. They had lovely ideas. The children then had a go at editing their poems, correcting spellings where necessary. Can your child tell you some of the ideas that they had in their poem?
In computing our topic is "presenting ideas". The children learnt that information could be put in quiz. They had a go working through a quiz about "Goldilocks And The Three Bears". There were lots of different ways that the questions could be answered. The children enjoyed working in pairs for this activity.
In art, the children referred back to their colour mixing skills from last week. This week they created their backgrounds for their Great Fire Of London paintings. Next week, they will add on the houses. The children remembered which primary colours to mix to get the secondary colour orange. They then remembered that black can make a shade darker and they also had white to make shades lighter.
As we have been thinking about habitats in science, the children went on a minibeast hunt to see what we could find in the habitat around school. We found lots of microhabitats with minibeasts. A microhabitat is a smaller habitat within a larger habitat. We found ladybirds in the bush, lots of butterflies on the school field, ants under a tree and lots of woodlice under a plant pot. The children had great fun seeing what they could find and then recording their findings in a tally chart. If you are out and about at the weekend, see if you can spot any minibeasts. Where are they living? What is their microhabitat like?
Let's get writing.....
We had reached the end of an ever increasingly warm week and it was time to not just practice our handwriting but also put this handwriting practice into our own writing skills with our next writing prompt....
As the 'awww's' filled the room, Kingfishers were excited to get writing and we couldn't wait to see what ideas they would have this week! It is lovely to see Kingfishers move on from basic sentences and begin thinking really carefully about how we can use exciting adjectives and conjunctions to extend their ideas!
We also began thinking beyond what we could see in the picture and started creating a storyline around this Kitten!
We continued to love delving into The Great Fire of London and this week moved onto this week's big question...
How do we know about The Great Fire of London?
We talked about how in 1666 there were no phone, camera's and that people from 1666 are no longer around so discussed how we might find out about what happened during the fire.
"From people who were there writing about the fire!"
"From paintings at the time of the fire!"
As we discussed different 'historical sources' that would help us, we also looked at how there were maps made around the time of the fire that could teach us what London looked like and from newspapers that were written at the time of the fire!
We then had to sort pictures that showed some sources that are useful when learning about The Great Fire of London and those that aren't useful!
It was soon time to go outside for PE and this week we were actually going to play a rounders match for the first time! We were split into two teams, the batters and the fielders and as the two teams took their places it was time for us to show off our ball skils!
We were off!
It was great to see Kingfishers work together in their teams, with encouragement for the batting team and Kingfishers working together to go and get the ball that had been hit and then throw it to one of their team members who were on a base.....
Everyone got a turn to bat and be a fielder, what a great first game!
Could we please just remind parents that all children must be bringing a hat and water bottle into school and have sun cream applied before coming to school. Next week is set to be extremely warm and we want all children to enjoy our outdoor areas as safely as possible, thank you for your support!
We look forward to another busy week next week, please keep safe in the sun over the weekend and we look forward to seeing many of you at the Summer Fair tomorrow!
