Well it has been another week of "living life in all its fullness"! We have celebrated Harvest Festival and World Mental Health Day as well as continuing with all our learning.
As always this term, we started the week with a fun filled session at forest school. The children had to find pretend spiders and their webs hanging in the trees, we made bird feeders from our last few apples from the apple tree, there was lots of balancing and as always, den making and lots of imaginative play!
In maths, Year 1 and Year 2 have continued to think about place value. They have been thinking about bigger numbers, smaller numbers, more than, less than and we have even been introduced to the symbols for comparing numbers in Year 2. These are <, > and =. The picture below shows that thirty - five is less than forty - two, 35 < 42.
In English, Year 1 have continued thinking about reading and writing words where there are two consonants next to each other. They have also enjoyed writing some of their tricky words outside on the playground. In grammar, they have continued to think about adding the suffix "ing". For example, I jump, I am jumping. This week they have learnt that if a verb ends in "e", they drop the final "e" before adding "ing". For example, I dance, I am dancing.
Year 2 have been going over their tricky words in their spelling lessons. They have thought about ways that they can learn these words and remember them and they have continued to think about using homophones and spelling these correctly. They have also started to plan their own version of "How To Catch A Star" by Oliver Jeffers. We went outside and found a star hanging in the tree. The children came up with lots of ideas for how they could catch a star. They thought they could huff and puff and blow the star down, they thought they could swing on a rope attached to the roof of the school, they could use a ladder and even robots were involved ... We look forward to reading their stories once they have written them next week.
In art, the children have put all their skills that they have learnt over the past few weeks to the test. They have painted the background for their own "Starry Night" painting in the style of Vincent Van Gogh. They mixed lots of shades of blue and used short brush strokes. Some children even tried to create swirl effects with their brush strokes just like in the original painting "The Starry Night". We think there could well be some future artists amongst the children.
As we zoomed into Thursday we also zoomed into a space adventure with our new class reading book.....
This book took us literally out of this world and into the world of 'Bob' The man on the moon! Kingfishers, were all delighted to meet Bob, who despite appear quite 'ordinary' was everything but 'ordinary' and in fact had a very interesting job!
After learning a little bit about Bob from the first few pages of the book and discussing how much we could in fact learn from this one picture of Bob, Kingfishers created their own word bank all about Bob! This will then help us to write our character descriptions next week....
As we joined forces again with our Year 1 Robins, it was time to recall all that we had so far learnt about the world! So far we could say that we lived in the United Kingdom and this is made up of 4 countries and name them. We could also name the 7 continents of the world and begin to talk about some key features of them, such as which of these continents were the biggest and what was meant by physical and human features!
Wow! That's a lot of information we've already learnt so this week it was time to start exploring what makes countries around the world hot or cold......it was time to introduce the equator!
As we discussed what the equator was and what this line might mean, we began to explore 4 different places around the world...
The United Kingdom, Canada, Antarctica and The Arctic
Once we'd located these on the map we discussed whether we thought they have hot or cold climates and why. Robins and Kingfishers were fantastic at giving reasons for this! They then worked hard to label their own maps to show where these countries were and describe the climates in them.
Friday was here and despite it being a grey morning a wave of yellow came floating through the school gates! To raise awareness for Mental Health this week we were delighted to see how many of us had come together to wear even the smallest amount of yellow for our Hello Yellow!
In wearing yellow you helped raise awareness of how important our Mental Health is and showed everyone that we are not alone with out Mental Health, a huge thankyou from us all!
With this in mind, sport is a fantastic way to help us all support our Mental Health so we all enjoyed spending the afternoon taking part in fitness activities! We discussed how our heart beat changed after we had taken part in running and what effect this had on our bodies and also what effect this has on on minds.
Today we also got to have a go at using timers to see just how fast we could run between the coloured spots, it was lovely to see the community spirit that all our children showed when cheering each other on and the perseverance of each and everyone of Robins and Kingfishers as they ran!
We were so fast that the camera almost couldn't catch us!
Home model making!
We were also fortunate enough to be shown a wonderful creation by one of our Kingfishers this week who had taken the time to make his very own 3D model!
We were all extremely impressed as we had been learning all about 3D shapes in Maths so were delighted to see this come to life.
Kingfishers loved the detail that had gone into his work and could see how much effort had been put into it so thank you so much for sharing!
