Term 2 Week 1
A Special Visit to Start Term 2
We’ve had a wonderful start to Term 2 in Owls Class with a very special visit from Bishop Mary and Reverend Mike. The children were so excited to welcome them into our classroom and to share our class worship.
During the worship, the children spoke confidently about how they are “Living life in all its fullness” as they reflected on the different ways they show kindness, gratitude and perseverance both in and out of school. They also talked about this term’s focus on our school value of compassion, sharing how they can show empathy and care for others through their words and actions.
Bishop Mary listened with great interest and was impressed by how thoughtful and articulate the children were when expressing their ideas. It was a lovely moment of togetherness, filled with smiles, curiosity and pride. What a fantastic way to begin our new term, feeling inspired, blessed and ready for all the learning ahead!
A Special RE Lesson with Rev. Mike
On Wednesday, Reverend Mike returned to spend the morning with Owls Class to lead a special RE lesson on 'The Greatest Commandments'. He shared readings from the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus teaches that the most important commandments are to love God and to love your neighbour as yourself.
Reverend Mike also read the Parable of the Good Samaritan, which helped the children understand what it truly means to show kindness and compassion, even to those we might not know well. The class had a thoughtful discussion about what this looks like in everyday life, from helping friends in the playground to showing respect and understanding at home and in school.
It was a calm and reflective morning filled with meaningful conversations and a deeper understanding of how compassion links to our school values and to living life in all its fullness.
Reading Comprehension
In our reading comprehension lessons this week, our theme was Halloween. We explored a range of spooky texts from the collections “Scary Stories,” “Scary Poems to Make You Shiver,” and “The Dark.” The children loved delving into all three, but The Dark was definitely the class favourite.
They particularly enjoyed performing the poem “Don’t Panic” using expression, rhythm and intonation. It was brilliant to see their confidence grow as they practised reading aloud to one another. Next time, we will focus on using even more expression and performance techniques, just like Michael Rosen does when he brings his poems to life.
As we wrap up this week, there is so much to look forward to next week. We will be diving deeper into our English and Maths lessons and starting Forest School on Monday afternoons, which the children are already buzzing about. In PE, we will be swapping our trainers for dancing shoes on Friday afternoons as we begin our new dance unit.
A gentle reminder to keep reading with your children every day. Even ten minutes of shared reading can make such a difference as it strengthens vocabulary, builds confidence and sparks a real love of books. Please remember to jot down each reading session in your child’s reading record so we can celebrate their progress together.
Maths homework is also a great way to reinforce what we have learned in class, so please make sure it is completed and handed in on time each week.
Owls Class have made such a brilliant start to the term, full of enthusiasm, curiosity and care. We cannot wait to see what next week brings.
