Term 1 Week 3
What a busy and brilliant week we’ve had in Owls Class!
The children have shown curiosity, creativity and determination in everything they’ve done.
Maths
This week in maths, Owls Class have been working hard to understand number lines to 1,000 and to 10,000. The children have practised finding the start and end points, counting the intervals and working out the value of each step. They have grown more confident in explaining their thinking using sentence stems such as “The difference between the start and end is…” and “Each interval is worth…”. It has been brilliant to see how focused they have been on this new concept.
English
In English, we have begun writing our setting descriptions of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, inspired by our class text Escape from Pompeii. Although we have not quite finished our pieces yet, the children have made an excellent start. They have impressed me by using ambitious vocabulary and applying the grammar skills we have been learning: adjectives, expanded noun phrases, personification and fronted adverbials. We can’t wait to share the finished descriptions soon.
PSHE
Our PSHE lessons have focused on creating our Class Charter. The children decided that one of the most important things to include was our school’s Christian value of Community. They have put this into practice by welcoming new classmates warmly, building friendships and looking out for each other. Owls Class have shown real pride in being part of a warm, caring and friendly school community where everyone is valued.
Music
Owls have been continuing their exciting journey into brass music. This week, they practised playing simple notes on their instruments and focused on breathing and timing. The classroom was alive with the sound of budding trumpeters and the children are growing in confidence each week.
Computing
In computing, the children have been using Purple Mash to learn how to send emails safely. They successfully sent emails to each other within the class and now understand the key vocabulary linked to this topic, such as “inbox,” “subject” and “send” and "receive". It was lovely to see them fully immersed in their learning.
P.E
In PE, we’ve been lucky to work with Coach Tom from MNR, who has been teaching Owls Class a range of football skills. The children have absolutely loved being out on the field in the fresh air, developing their dribbling, passing and teamwork. Their energy and smiles show just how much they are enjoying these sessions, and it’s fantastic to see their confidence growing week by week.
We are so proud of how Owls Class have lived out our school value of Community this week by supporting one another in lessons, on the field and around school. Thank you to families for your ongoing support with homework and daily reading. Together, we’re helping the children grow as confident, kind learners.
