Term 1 Week 2

19 Sep 25

Another fun filled week in Owls Class has flown by, packed with exciting learning and plenty of hard work!

In maths, we have been exploring partitioning and flexible partitioning using place value charts and part whole models. The children discovered that numbers can be broken apart in more than one way, helping them to see the true value of each digit.

We reinforced this learning through practical activities where pupils used concrete resources such as counters, base ten blocks and place value charts. This hands on approach gave everyone the chance to practise, test their thinking and explain their reasoning to a partner.

What was particularly impressive was how confidently the children recognised that there is not always just one right way to partition a number. They learned that flexibility is the key to mastering place value.

We are excited to build on this next week as we take on new mathematical challenges.

In English, we have been exploring the features of a setting description and asking ourselves what writers need to include to capture the reader’s imagination. Using a dramatic description of Mount Vesuvius erupting, the children worked together to spot examples of:

Adjectives to add colour and detail

Sensory language to describe sounds, sights and smells

Similes and personification to create vivid imagery

Expanded noun phrases to add depth and precision

Powerful verbs to show action and movement

The children highlighted these features in the text and then began thinking about how they can use them in their own writing.

In music, Owls Class had their very first experience with brass instruments and what an adventure it was. With Mr Williams leading the way, the children were introduced to the trumpet. The room was soon buzzing with excitement as they learned how to hold the instrument and have a go at producing their first sounds.

From bold blasts to wobbly notes, the classroom was filled with laughter and curiosity as everyone discovered just how much breath and control it takes to play the trumpet.

This is just the beginning of our brass journey and we cannot wait to see how the children’s skills and confidence grow over the coming weeks. Who knows, we might have some future jazz stars in the making!

This week the children have also been excited to make apple crumble with Mrs O and Miss Carter in preparation for the Newbury Show. Using our crop of apples, they enjoyed peeling, chopping and mixing before putting everything together to bake a delicious crumble. The smell of warm apple and cinnamon drifting through the classroom made everyone’s mouths water. Pictures of the children’s work have also been proudly displayed in the Education Tent at the show for visitors to enjoy.

Finally this week, reading records have been handed out. Children are expected to read daily at home and record this in their reading record. We encourage families to make reading a special part of the day, perhaps enjoying a book together at bedtime. Reading should feel enjoyable and not like a chore, and the more children read, the more their confidence and imagination will grow.

Homework for maths, English and spelling has also been given out. We ask that children complete their homework with care, and we would love for parents to support them at home. Homework is not just about practice, it is also about celebrating learning together and showing pride in their achievements.

The children have also been given their Times Tables Rock Stars logins. They have already started practising in class and are very excited about challenging themselves. Regular practice at home will make a big difference, so please encourage your child to log in and take part in the activities. You might even like to join in and see if you can beat their score

It has been a busy and exciting week for Owls Class and the children have tackled every challenge with energy and smiles. We cannot wait to see what next week brings.
