On Tuesday 6th November 2018, years 5 and 6 children (Eagles class) were joined by members of the Great Shefford and Shefford Woodlands community at St. Stephen’s Church, Shefford Woodlands to share in their moving performance of “We Will Remember Them”; especially written by Geraldine McCaughrean, local author and winner of the 2018 Carnegie Medal.

Through ‘witness statements’ read by the children, they told the story of the experiences of soldiers in the Great War, nurses attending to the wounded and those at home who contributed to the war effort in so many capacities.

Members of the Shefford Woodlands and Great Shefford and community who lost their lives during the Great War were commemorated through moving readings of ‘their words’ by members of the community in the congregation.

The emotional and moving performance ended withThe Last Post, played by pupil Joseph Higgins.  The Revd Miriam Keen closed the occasion with prayers of remembrance and thanks for the sacrifices made for us in past and present conflicts.

Mrs Goodrich, Headteacher, thanked and congratulated all involved in the preparation and moving performance; the school staff, children and those in the congregation who had given readings. Particular thanks were given to Serena Nickson, Church Warden, who had arranged the event and Geraldine McCaughrean who had so generously given her time.

BBC Berkshire visited the school and interviewed staff and pupils about the performance. You can see some pictures taken during their visit in this gallery.
